A new care home complete with a cocktail bar and cinema can be built on “unsightly” empty land in Glasgow’s west end.

Plans from Northcare Ltd to create a 60-bed home on Cleveden Road in Kelvindale have been approved by council planners.

It will be constructed on the site of a former council-owned care home, Rannoch House, which has been demolished.

The developers are planning to invest £10m in the project, which will create 60 jobs, the application states.

It adds the home will “provide much needed accommodation for the ever-increasing elderly population, allowing them to live their lives with dignity and independence with specialist assistance at hand”.

A plan to build 30 homes on the land was approved in 2024, but the previous applicant “no longer wishes to develop the site, which has now been bought by Northcare (Scotland) Ltd”, the application states.

The old care home, operated by the council’s social work services, has been knocked down, leaving a “gap site” along Cleveden Road. Northcare’s application adds its proposal would “reinstate the site with a social purpose and provide the opportunity to deliver ‘best in class’ facilities”.

It continues: “Though the former building has been removed, some of the existing hardscaping and concrete remains and has been left to decline.

“As a result, the site is currently unused and neglected. It is unsightly and unsuitable for public use or greenspace and presents as a gap within the context of the street.”

The company, which operates a number of homes within the UK, is planning to provide a range of common spaces, including a cocktail lounge, brasserie, dining room, quiet room, a salon/spa and a cinema. There would be 12 car parking spaces.

There were four objections to the applicant, with concerns including limited on-site parking and the height and appearance of the proposed building. A letter of support from Kelvindale Community Council was submitted.
