Plans for 800 new homes in Glasgow given boost as site to be sold

Plans to build around 800 homes near Easterhouse have received a boost after councillors agreed to the sale of land for an access road.

A site at Westerhouse Road, Gartloch, is set to be sold to Apsley Gartloch Ltd, the firm behind the major housing proposal.

Part of the site is within the Bishop Loch local nature reserve. Councillors were told there are ongoing talks between the developer and the council’s planning department over this issue.

Apsley owns adjoining land and intends to submit an application for planning permission in principle, councillors were told.

The firm has previously said it is proposing to deliver up to 800 units on a 49-hectare site at Gartloch Farm in the city’s east end.

A new mixed-use neighbourhood, including shops, cafes and restaurants, could also be included to support the housing development. Pre-application consultation has been held.

Councillors on Glasgow’s contracts and property committee approved the principle of an off-market disposal of the land, on the north side of Westerhouse Road, to Apsley at a meeting yesterday (Thursday).

They instructed officials to negotiate the terms and conditions of a deal for the site, which stretches to over 19 acres.

A council report stated: “The proposed purchaser is the owner of the adjoining housing development site having purchased it in December 2025.

“The purchaser is aiming to submit a planning permission in principle in September 2026 for the development of c.800 residential units on the adjacent land.

“The Purchaser approached property and consultancy services with a view to acquiring land to construct an access road to the development site from Westerhouse Road. The exact route of the road will be determined during the planning process.”

Councillors also agreed to sell land at Ledgowan Place and Sandbank Street to Maryhill Housing Association, which is planning to build 138 homes.

Cllr Ruairi Kelly, SNP, the council’s deputy leader and housing convener, said: “These decisions will enable hundreds of new homes to be built… for the people of Glasgow at a time when new housing is very much needed.”
