A new activity centre for people with additional support needs could be established in Newmains.

North Lanarkshire Council has received a planning application which proposes a new venue offering indoor and outdoor respite and therapy for families, adults and children be constructed at a property off Mill Road.

A statement provided in support of the application explains that many people struggle to find suitable facilities and the aim of this project is to offer a “safe, stimulating, and therapeutic environment for all”.

Services mentioned in this statement include alpaca walks, mindfulness therapies, nature walks, hot tubs, saunas, and cold-water dipping in addition to educational and sensory activities for nurseries, schools, support groups, and care homes.

The intention is that the interior space would be primarily open plan, allowing for group activities such as yoga, but with adaptable partitions to provide private areas as needed.

The indoor area could also offer accommodation allowing those who need 24 hour care to stay with a carer or for families to take respite breaks aided by support staff.

This accommodation is expected to mainly be used by small groups for two or three nights during weekends and public holidays, as well as by slightly larger groups during the week by people participating in other activities.
