Police and forensic officers sick after 'hazardous material' probe

Residents were evacuated on Monday evening and have been returned to their homes on Tuesday morning.

Seven police and a forensics officer fell ill after being called to a flat in Glasgow.

Emergency services were deployed to the scene at a property on Altyre Street near Wellshot Primary School in Shettleston after the alarm was raised at around 5pm on Monday.

Dozens of homes were evacuated after a “potentially hazardous material” was discovered.

Altyre Street, Dalness Street, Ard Street and Trainard Avenue were all closed with cordons in place.

Around 100 residents were given emergency accommodation in nearby Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

The seven officers and a member of Scottish Police Authority Forensic Services staff who took unwell received treatment at the scene.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Centre dispatched a hazmat unit and three appliances at around 5.39pm with members of the public asked to avoid the scene.

An Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team was also on the scene as police tried to determine the nature of the materials.

Police confirmed on Tuesday morning that residents had been allowed to return home.

The routes around the neighbourhood have since reopened.

Chief superintendent Alan Waddell said: “Our enquiries into the incident are ongoing, and there will be a continued police presence in the area. We are working closely with our partners.

“I would like to thank residents and motorists for their patience whilst we dealt with this incident.

“There was no danger to the wider public.”
