Police have launched an investigation after a video circulated online appeared to show a statue of Walter Smith on fire.

Officers confirmed they received a report of “fire damage” to the statue of the late Rangers manager on Edmiston Drive at around 9.15am on Friday.

The former chairman and Rangers manager passed away aged 73 in October 2021, and a statue was erected in 2024.

Smith was one of the most successful managers in the club’s history, having won 21 major trophies and taken the club to the UEFA Cup final in 2008.

Police Scotland said that enquiries remain at an early stage.

A spokesperson said: “Around 9.15am on Friday, October 10, 2025, we received a report of fire damage to a statue in the Edmiston Drive area of Glasgow.

“Enquiries are at an early stage.”

A Rangers spokesperson said: “Rangers FC is aware of an incident at the Walter Smith statue last night, and strongly condemns this shameful behaviour.

“The matter has been reported to Police Scotland, and work is underway to ensure the site is cleaned and returned to good condition.”
