Police have confirmed they have launched a probe after a man was caught on camera appearing to mock the Ibrox disaster.

Footage from Sunday’s Old Firm clash at Ibrox appears to show a man among Celtic supporters holding a mobile phone with the number 66 visible on the screen, chanting with his hands in the air. He then puts the phone away and raises six fingers repeatedly.

The 1971 Ibrox disaster was a crush among the crowd on an exit stairway at an Old Firm football game that led to the deaths of 66 people.

Responding to a request for comment regarding the video from Sunday’s match, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident and enquiries are ongoing.”

A Rangers spokesperson said: “The Ibrox disaster remains the darkest day in our club’s history and continues to affect a number of families to this day.

“The mocking and celebration of any tragedy is abhorrent, and has no place in any football stadium or society as a whole.”

A spokesperson for Celtic said they will investigate the matter fully and take any appropriate action.

A police officer was assaulted and two people arrested before the match at Ibrox. Other investigations are continuing into fan behaviour at the Old Firm game.

There is an ongoing probe into a display in the home end showed former player Graeme Souness holding a shotgun above a banner reading “Take aim against the rebel scum”.

Rangers said the display, which was organised by fans, was “unacceptable”, “crossed a line” and lacked good judgment.

In another incident, what appeared to be an empty Buckfast bottle was thrown onto the pitch, close to the goal being defended by Celtic keeper Viljami Sinisalo.

Sinisalo was seen removing other items from the turf before Rangers substitute Neraysho Kasanwirjo helped by coming on to the pitch and removing the bottle.

Rangers said an investigation is already under way to identify who threw the bottle and that the club will take “the strongest action” against the individual.
