Police say car may have travelled wrong way down motorway, killing four Scots in head-on M6 crash

Police investigating a fatal collision which killed five people, including four from Glasgow, say one vehicle involved in the crash may have been travelling the wrong way on the M6.

Cumbria officers were called to the busy motorway near to Tebay Services at around 4pm on Tuesday after they received reports of a Skoda travelling southbound on the northbound carriage.

Whilst enroute to the scene, police were made aware that the vehicle had been involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota.

A 42-year-old man, 33-year-old woman and and two boys aged 15 and seven, all from Glasgow, who were in the Toyota, were pronounced dead at the scene.

The 40-year-old male driver of the Skoda, from Cambridgeshire, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

A seven-year-old boy was airlifted from the M6 following the crash Great North Air Ambulance ·

A second seven-year-old boy, who was in the Toyota, was transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where he remains in a serious condition.

Formal identification of those who have died in the fatal crash is yet to take place.

Police have confirmed the families of those involved are receiving support from specially trained officers.

A post from the Great North Air Ambulance Service read: “Yesterday at 4:19 PM, our critical care teams were dispatched to an incident on the M6 near Tebay.

“The Pride of Cumbria II arrived on scene in just eight minutes. Our doctor and paramedic team provided immediate treatment to one patient before airlifting them to the hospital.

“We worked in close collaboration with the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, Cumbria Police, Beep Doctors and Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service to ensure the best possible care for all involved.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with everyone affected by this incident.”
