Fried chicken chain Popeyes has announced the opening date of its third Scottish location in Glasgow city centre – and will give the first three customers free food for a year.
The company announced that it will bring “a taste of New Orleans” to the city with a new location on Sauchiehall Street, and will officially open to the public on Friday, July 5.
The opening comes just a few months after the opening of the chain’s first Scottish restaurant in Barrhead September last year.
Customers queued for around 18.5 hours before the doors officially opened, breaking the record for the longest wait for the Louisiana chain’s famous chicken by queuing overnight.
There may be further queues ahead after the restaurant announced that the first 50 people in line will receive “fantastic prizes”, including limited edition Popeyes sneakers.
The first three people in the queue will also win free Popeyes for a year.
Popeyes, which has more than 4,000 restaurants globally, first expanded from the US into the UK in late 2021.
The quick service restaurant chain has since grown to include 36 locations, including five drive-thru sites, and employ 2,300 workers.
After Popeyes’ highly successful launch into Scotland in Barrhead last Autumn, followed by Aberdeen this spring, residents of central Glasgow have been waiting for their turn.
The Glasgow restaurant, situated at 108 – 110 Sauchiehall Street, will mark Popeyes’ 17th opening this year, and the 50th store opening in the UK.
Tom Crowley, CEO at Popeyes UK, said: “Since we opened in Barrhead last Autumn, we’ve been asked for a city centre restaurant and we are thrilled to announce that Popeyes will be opening in the heart of Glasgow this summer.
“Opening in Scotland has been key for us since we first landed in the UK, and we’re looking forward to welcoming a fantastic new crowd to our next location.
“Our recent openings have been some of the biggest to date, not just in the UK but for Popeyes globally, and we are confident that this next launch in Scotland will prove just as popular.”
