An investigation has been launched after an abandoned dog was found emaciated and covered in faeces and urine.
Sadly, the seriously ill Staffordshire bull terrier had to be put down after being handed into vets by a member of the public.
The female brindle and white dog was discovered within Udston and Glenlee Community Woodland in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, on Sunday.
The Scottish SPCA has now launched an investigation.
Inspector Dawn Murrie said: “The dog was in a very poor state, emaciated and covered in faeces and urine.
“The vets made every effort to stabilise her, but unfortunately her condition was so poor that she had to be put to sleep on welfare grounds.”
Vets at the Vets4Pets Hamilton branch estimated that the dog, which was not microchipped, was between eight and 12-months-old.
Inspector Murrie added: “While we appreciate the owner of this dog may have intended for her to be found, this is not the correct procedure to follow if you can no longer take care of an animal or afford veterinary treatment.”
