A seven-screen cinema could be built in a new retail park in the Gorbals.

Plans have been submitted to Glasgow City Council requesting permission to combine two units within the Crown Street Retail Park to make way for the 600-seat cinema and a restaurant/bar.

The site, off Cathcart Road, is currently being developed, with Aldi, B&M, Iceland Food Warehouse, Costa and Burger King all signed up.

It is part of a wider regeneration project which includes almost 400 homes.

Planning permission was first granted for a retail and restaurant development, including a gym, in 2018.

A letter submitted with the application states: “The cinema will have an ancillary restaurant/bar function and it is also proposed that the cinema would be used for conference and events space during other times.

“The hours of operation are not yet known but clearly this will include late night opening.”

The application has been submitted by Clydebuilt LP, a joint venture between Strathclyde Pension Fund and property investment company Ediston, which was launched in 2014.

Plans for 388 homes, on land next to the retail park, were approved in August last year.

The houses will be contained in five blocks, which will centre round a public pace.

It is expected the first apartments will be ready to move into next year.

Aldi announced its plans to open two new Glasgow stores, including the Crown Street premises, in January.
