Queer bookshop Category is Books in Govanhill vandalised again, two weeks after targeted attack

A queer bookshop in Glasgow has been vandalised again just weeks after a window was smashed targeting the word “TRANS”.

Category Is Books, in Govanhill, raised over £14,000 in just 12 hours on September 11 to help pay for roller shutters after the shop said it had faced a growing pattern of “intimidation, spitting and aggression”.

The independent bookshop has operated for eight years without shutters, but said the recent attack prompted owners to seek extra security.

The fundraiser reached its £10,000 target within 12 hours, with the shop thanking people for their “generosity and solidarity”.

However, in an update from the shop on Thursday, nearly two weeks after the attack, owners revealed the shop’s window was smashed again.

The update read: “There was another window smash on the bookshop last night. It is pretty bad. We’ve taped it up and contacting insurance etc as before. Everyone is OK.

“Likely to re-open the crowdfunder tomorrow morning once we know what can actually be covered.

“Bring on the shutters! Being made as we speak.”
