A rapist who abused a young girl has been jailed – as a judge praised her for her “dignity” in bravely testifying against him.
Colin Murray preyed on the child for two years including raping her at a property in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.
The 64-year-old was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow, having earlier been convicted by jurors.
Murray, of Larkhall, was found guilty of rape as well lewd and libidinous behaviour towards the girl between 2006 and 2008.
The court heard how he continues to “strongly” protest his innocence.
Sentencing, Judge Tom Hughes said he had read a victim impact statement describing the “significant” and “long-term” effect the ordeal has had on the now woman.
He told Murray: “What is clear is that, no matter how long it takes, there is a significant chance that matters like this will come before the courts.
“A very clear message has to be sent out that females and young children should be protected from this type of offending.
“The (victim) gave her evidence with dignity – I have read that she found it difficult.
“I can only hope that she can take some comfort that she was able to come to court, the jury accepted her evidence, and hopefully that will give her some consolation for the future.”
Murray was sentenced to a total of six years. He was also put on the sex offenders list indefinitely.
