A Rolls-Royce worth £235,000 which was donated to Glasgow City Council has been sold.
The car was gifted to the city by confectionery tycoon Sir Boyd Tunnock in 2018.
Eva Bolander, Lord Provost at that time, said she believed the car would help Glasgow to “show its best face”.
Bolander, who resigned in 2019 following a backlash over billing taxpayers £8,000 for clothes, shoes and beauty products, described it as a “show-stopping car” and a “tremendous asset”.
Despite criticism over their acceptance of the gift, the council said they expected the car to save the city money.
However, the vehicle has now been sold off, with plans for the proceeds to go towards charity, as well as helping vulnerable young people as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
There are no plans to directly replace the car, the council confirmed.
A council spokesman said: “The car was a very generous gift to the city that reflected the former owner’s affection for Glasgow and its people – and it is important that the proceeds of the sale also benefit them directly.
“Plans are being made to ensure it supports a small number of projects – which would include the Lord Provost’s charitable funds, as well as giving some of the city’s most vulnerable young people an opportunity to become involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards.”
The spokesperson continued: “Officers continually look at the council’s overall transport needs, including its fleet of cars and other vehicles, and they determined that the car no longer met those needs.
“The Lord Provost has primarily travelled in other cars from within the council’s fleet for some time now – with a 100% electric Nissan Leaf the most common option. There are no plans to directly replace the car.”
