A schoolboy has been arrested after threats were allegedly made towards pupils and teachers at a school in Inverclyde.

Police were called on Thursday afternoon after the alleged threats emerged in relation to St Columba’s Secondary School in Gourock.

Investigations into the circumstances are ongoing while a 14-year-old youth has been arrested in connection.

In a letter issued to parents, headteacher Nicola Devine said that “all appropriate action is being taken” and that staff and pupils were to attend school as usual on Friday.

She added: “Earlier today, Thursday, November 28, 2024, we were informed of an allegation suggesting a threat towards pupils and teachers on Friday, November 29.

“Swift and appropriate action was taken, including contacting Inverclyde Council and referring the matter to police who are now investigating.”

She added that no further detail could be provided due to the live police investigation but that the “health and safety of everyone in the school is paramount”.

Chief inspector David Doherty, area commander for Inverclyde, said: “Around 3.40pm on Thursday, November 28, we received a report of threatening communications.

“A 14-year-old male youth has been arrested and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
