A Scottish superbike rider who was placed in an induced coma after a crash during a race has woken up.

Callum Grigor was left in a “serious” condition after a collision at Donington Park during the Pirelli National Superstock Championship race earlier this month.

The 27-year-old, from Wishaw, suffered a head injury from the initial impact of the crash, along with some non-structural spinal fractures.

He was also left with a broken left scapula, including his shoulder socket, a broken right elbow joint and a deep puncture wound to his left upper arm.

His family say the biggest injury he sustained was to his chest and lungs, including multiple rib fractures.

More than £23,000 has been raised for Callum and his family to support them while he receives treatment.

A statement posted by British Superbikes on Sunday read: “As of this weekend, he has slowly been taken out of his coma by reducing his medications over several days.

“He has now opened his eyes and is able to minimally communicate but is still very sleepy. Although he is smiling at all the nurses who have come to see him, finally awake.

“This afternoon, he has had the breathing tube for the ventilator removed and is trying to maintain his O2 levels with the help of a mask. We are hoping that his lungs can cope with this chang,e and the medical staff will continue to monitor this very closely.

“He has received a head injury from the initial impact along with some non-structural spinal fractures, as well as broken his left scapula, including the socket for the shoulder, broken his right elbow joint and suffered a deep but small puncture wound to his left upper arm.

“The biggest injury he sustained was to his chest and lungs, including multiple rib fractures.

“We will share all your messages with Callum when his head is a little clearer, and hopefully he can thank you all himself.”

The team thanked medical staff at British Superbikes (BSB) and those at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.

“Their efforts have undoubtedly saved his life. We can never thank them all enough,” they added.

The Scot crashed with fellow rider and Isle of Man-born Nathan Harrison, who suffered a fractured back and a broken femur in the collision.

In a social media update, Harrison’s team says he is recovering from emergency surgery and is walking with a frame.

The 26-year-old said: “Thanks again to everyone for the well wishes and of course hope Callum is making more improvements In his recovery.”

Team Grigor added: “We were delighted and relieved to see Nathan up on his feet in his last update. We continue to send our well wishes to Nathan and his family.”
