A Scottie dog statue has been removed from a Glasgow charity trail after suffering “significant damage”.

The sculpture, known as Wanderlust, was located outside Buchanan Bus Station and is sponsored by Citylink.

Designed by Charlotte Brayley, it was one of 40 statues dotted around the city in support of cancer charity Maggie’s.

The statue suffered “significant damage”, including chunks of its fibreglass shell being torn off at the base.

As a result, it has been removed from the trail until it can be fully repaired.

Following the damage, Maggie’s has launched a fundraiser to help cover the costs of repairs to Wanderlust.

Police have also launched an investigation into the vandalism.

A spokesperson said: “Around 8.30am on Monday, July 20, officers received a report of damage to a statue on Killermont Street, Glasgow. Enquiries are ongoing.”

If the statue cannot be repaired in time to rejoin the Scotties in the City trail, the aim is for it to make an appearance at the farewell weekend at the end of August.

All of the Scottie dogs will be put up for auction in September, raising vital funds for Maggie’s.

Maggie’s director of income generation, Mark Cooper, said: “It is very sad to see our sculpture damaged. It is such a disappointment for the artist, the sculpture’s sponsor Citylink and for the wider public who have really taken the Scotties to their heart.

“We do hope to be able to repair Wanderlust but of course this comes with a cost.

“We’re hopeful that, once again, the public will come together and help ensure the cost of repairs are covered so every penny raised from the auction of the Scottie sculptures goes towards supporting people facing a cancer diagnosis.”
