A Scottish ferry crew rescued two paddleboarders from the water near Largs after receiving a mayday call.
The CalMac crew on MV Loch Shira was called by the Coastguard around 9.30pm on May 8 to help a pair in difficulty in the Castle Bay area.
The crew were able to find the paddleboarders thanks to the lights on their equipment and a mobile phone torch.
Despite attempting to swim ashore, the combination of tide and buoyancy equipment meant they were unable to reach land.
Meanwhile, navigational hazards in the area, including moored vessels, moorings and shallow water, made a ramp recovery impossible.
A decision was made to launch a rescue boat before the paddleboarders were brought safely aboard.
The stranded pair were both displaying early signs of hypothermia and were estimated to have been in the water for around 40 minutes.
The rescue boat took the casualties to Largs pier, where emergency services and shore staff were waiting.
The Loch Shira returned to Largs at 10pm, allowing the final Largs to Cumbrae round trip of the day to operate as scheduled.
The rescued pair travelled on board the vessel the following day and personally thanked the crew for their actions.
Ross Parker, head of fleet at CalMac, said: “This is an excellent example of calm, competent, professional teamwork in challenging conditions.
“The crew of MV Loch Shira acted quickly, launched the rescue boat and ensured the two casualties were brought to safety.
“Their swift and decisive actions made all the difference, and they exemplified the best of CalMac.”
