The Scottish SPCA is appealing for scratching posts for cats in its care.

The Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Cardonald has looked after nearly 200 cats so far this year.

As well as the scratching posts, the animal welfare charity is also appealing for non-biological washing powder.

Katrina Cavanagh, centre assistant manager, said: “Scratching posts ensure that the cats can keep their claws in good condition.

“The cattery can be quite a stressful environment for cats, especially when they first arrive, so providing them with enrichment like scratching posts can also help to stimulate them mentally and keep their mind active.”

Due to the Covid restrictions, the charity is only able to accept donations of new scratching posts and cannot accept second-hand items.

Ms Cavanagh added: “It may not seem like the most obvious item a rehoming centre would need, but washing powder is actually vital to the everyday running of the centre.

“We do constant loads of washing on a daily basis and washing powder is essential to make sure animals like Mike have clean bedding to keep them comfy and cosy while they wait for their forever home.

“We currently have lots of feline friends in our care who are looking for a new home, like Mike. Mike is between one and two-years-old and arrived in to our care as a stray.

“He’s quite a timid boy but is getting braver day by day. He absolutely loves his grub and treats are most definitely the way to his heart.

“We’d be so grateful for any donations that people can spare and we know Mike, and the rest of the cats, will be too.”

Items can be purchased from the Scottish SPCA’s Amazon wishlist or via any other online retailer offering direct delivery to the centre.

Items can also be left in the donation bins outside the centre at 125 Kinnell Place, Glasgow, G52 3RY.
