A second man has been charged after a “suspicious item” was discovered in a flat and destroyed by the Royal Navy bomb squad.

Police officers discovered the item while searching a flat in Clydebank’s Overtoun Court on Monday, October 28, in connection with an ongoing investigation into a man’s unexplained death nearby.

Several homes in the area were evacuated, and train services running through Dalmuir Station were cancelled.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to destroy the device safely. Residents were allowed to return home at 2.30am on Tuesday, October 29.

Chris Gates appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Wednesday following the incident on Overtoun Court on Monday afternoon.

The 26-year-old from Clydebank was charged with being illegally in possession of, or purchasing, or acquiring, ammunition.

Gates made no plea and was remanded in custody pending further examination. He is due to appear before court again within eight days.

Officers have arrested and charged a second man, aged 41, in connection with a firearms offence. He is due to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday, November 11
