Sexual health expert issues STI warning as Commonwealth Games gets under way

A sexual health expert has issued a warning over STIs as the Commonwealth Games get under way in Glasgow.

According to Lovehoney, a sexual health nurse who worked at a Glasgow clinic during the previous Games said their clinic saw increased demand for sexual health services and STI diagnoses at the time.

The warning comes after the Winter Olympics ran out of condoms, which hit headlines in February.

Athletes from around the world have descended on Glasgow for the games, with the opening ceremony kicking off on Thursday and events taking place until August 2.

Sarah Mulindwa, Lovehoney’s sexual health expert, senior sexual health nurse and TV presenter, said: “Planning ahead for your sexual health is no different from preparing for a heatwave – carry condoms if you think you may need them, know where to access healthcare and look out for your friends.”

She added: “Major sporting events bring thousands of people together, so it’s sensible that sexual health services prepare for increased demand.

“The Commonwealth Games are an exciting opportunity for people from around the world to come together and celebrate sport, but we want everyone to enjoy the event while looking after their health.

“Carry condoms if you think you may need them, get tested if you’ve had unprotected sex or a new sexual partner, and seek advice promptly if you’re worried about HIV exposure or need emergency contraception. Looking after your sexual health is a normal part of looking after your overall wellbeing.”
