A motorcycle belonging to the most successful speedway rider in Glasgow Tigers’ history has gone on display.
The bike used by Steve Lawson, the club’s longest-serving captain, has been fixed to the Motorbike Wall at the Riverside Museum.
Lawson made his Tigers debut aged 16 in 1974, before topping the scoreboard four years later as they won the Scottish Cup.
In the early 80s he went 60 straight league races undefeated – a club record which stands to this day.
His phenomenal career ended when he retired from the sport in 1992.
Lawson said: “Seeing the bike again fills me with happy memories. Riding for Glasgow was a great time for me – the fans were very welcoming, generous and made me feel wanted. I became part of the furniture.
“I remember the fans used to do a ‘Stevie Lawson chant’ which stood the hairs up on the back of my neck – that was really touching.”
The Glasgow museum’s Motorbike Wall features more than 100 years of history, from the Beeston Humber of 1903 to Ewan McGregor’s BMW R1200 of 2007.
Councillor David McDonald, chair of museum operator Glasgow Life, said: “Steve Lawson enjoyed a glittering speedway career. It’s a fast and furious sport and I’m amazed at the speed racers can achieve.
“However, I think that like me, many people will be pleased to have an opportunity to admire the bike in all its glory rather than seeing it fly by on the track.”
