A Glasgow school has paid tribute to a “much loved” student with a passion for music who was murdered on Wednesday night.

Emergency services were called to Clarendon Street in the city at around 10.30pm following reports of a 15-year-old being found seriously injured.

Amen Teklay was pronounced dead at the scene.

A major investigation was launched by Police Scotland, who are treating the incident as murder.

The 15-year-old attended St Thomas Aquinas Secondary in the west end of Glasgow. Headteacher, Claire McInally, has described Amen as a “friendly” schoolboy who “showed great promise”.

She said: “This is a tragic situation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Amen’s family and friends at this devastating time.

“Amen was a friendly and much loved young man who was really interested in music and the media. He was bright and showed great promise.

“This has been a shock for our school community, and we are continuing to offer support to our young people, staff and those in the wider community who are affected.”

A large police presence remains in the area as officers continue to investigate.

Detective superintendent Cheryl Kelly said she believes “answers lie in the community” and that the murder was being treated as an isolated incident.

She described the victim as a “child”, and said his death was a “tragedy”.

Ms Kelly said: “Our thoughts are with the Amen’s family and friends at this distressing time. We will continue to provide specialist support for them as our investigation continues.

“We are still keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and anyone who has dash cam, private CCTV or doorbell footage around the time of the incident.”

Chief inspector Colin MacLucas, local area commander, added: “I understand that residents in the area will be very concerned following this incident however I can reassure them we are working very closely with our detective colleagues to establish the circumstances and I can assure them that there will continue to be a visible policing presence in the area.

“I would urge anyone with questions, concerns or information to approach officers who are there to help.

“Anyone with information can contact Police Scotland quoting incident number 3652 of March 5, or contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Detectives have also set up a portal that gives members of the public access to a form to send information directly to the Major Investigation Team, which can be submitted anonymously.
