Stirling Council to investigate demolition of 117-year-old city clock

A review of a historic and famous clock’s removal from Stirling’s town centre has been commissioned after the council faced outrage from residents.

Last week, the 117-year-old Christie Memorial Clock was found to be unstable when it was inspected by structural engineers as part of a routine maintenance regime.

Stirling Council said that on Friday, “contractors tried valiantly for five hours to remove the crown of this well-loved landmark but, unfortunately, due to the lack of stability within the clock structure, the pillar also had to be removed from site”.

Locals from the area criticised the council removing the clock and claimed it had been removed at night with no warning.

However, the council defended its actions stating that conservation officers were involved in the inspection along with senior stonemasons and structural engineers.

The council leader, Chris Kane, has said the local authority “acknowledged and shared the public upset” following the Christie Clock’s demolition.

He said: “We are fully committed to the rebuild and restoration of this important local landmark. Officers will work at pace to prepare a report for the next Council meeting to provide further information on that plan. The legacy of the Christie Clock will be preserved.

“The videos that circulated on social media over the weekend were distressing and I share the shock of residents at the way the Christie Clock came down.

“The chief executive has commissioned an immediate review of the circumstances which led to the demolition following the identification of serious structural issues last Tuesday, August 29.

“We received specialist advice which recommended that the clock be removed for off-site repairs, which was scheduled for Friday evening and, ultimately, led to the images we watched with such concern.

“The council will work with all relevant external organisations throughout the review process.

“The council recognises that this event has caused widespread concern and will immediately implement any recommendations made by the review.”
