A huge GP surgery and health centre, which will combine services located at nine different sites, is due to open within weeks in Glasgow’s East End.

There will be three GP practices based at the new building in Duke Street – Forge Medical Practice, Drs McKenzie and Burns and Meadowpark Surgery – as well as other services.

The health and social care building is one of the largest of its kind in the UK, and it is hoped that patients will be able to access treatment by the end of January.

Staff are expected to move into the ‘Parkhead Hub’ next month.

When open, the Hub will provide services for children, adults and older people, addictions, justice, homelessness, sexual health and health improvement, with GP services, community pharmacy and dental services.

The facility will also provide community spaces including bookable rooms, a café and the relocated Parkhead library, which is operated by Glasgow Life.

The Hub, which was designed by Hoskins Architects, has been built on the site of the former Parkhead Hospital and current Sandyford, Anvil Centre and Parkhead Health Centre at Salamanca Street. Hub West Scotland was appointed by NHSGGC as its development partner to deliver the project and BAM Construction are the lead contractor.

Shettleston councillor Thomas Kerr, Conservative, said: “This new facility will help support patients right across the East End and has the potential to transform how we deliver healthcare to them.

“All too often many of my constituents are frustrated that they cannot get a GP appointment or are struggling to access other vital healthcare facilities on their own doorstep.

“This will effectively be a one-stop shop for patients when it opens, and it must be fully resourced by the SNP government to ensure it delivers what East End communities expect.”

The building is Scotland’s largest net-zero carbon health and social care centre.

Councillor Chris Cunningham, Glasgow City Council’s convener for health, care and caring, and older people, said: “The Parkhead Hub will be, without doubt, a fantastic community asset for the north-east of the city.

“Our ambition is to ensure that everyone in Glasgow can lead healthier lives, and the new hub, and all the services it will provide will help us achieve that.

“This is a great example of co-locating services and partnership working. It’s a one-stop shop for residents to access services from a range of organisations including the city council, Glasgow Life and the Glasgow Health and Social Care Partnership.”

Professor Tom Steele, director of estates and facilities at NHSGGC, said: “NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is committed to an ongoing programme of maintenance and replacement, to help ensure that all our facilities provide space for high-quality, modern healthcare.

“The Parkhead Hub is the just latest in a number of major health and social care developments throughout the NHSGGC area, and I would like to thank Hub West Scotland, BAM Construction and all our partners for their commitment and collaboration in this project.”
