Glasgow’s council leader has told delegates gathered for the opening of the UN climate conference that the people of the city will be “watching and judging” them during the two weeks of talks.
Susan Aitken said Glasgow could not be prouder to host COP26 but that “demands and expectations will be high”.
She welcomed the visitors from all over the world on Sunday as the summit got under way.
She said: “This is a city that has been through tough times. But we have survived and thrived against the odds through resilience, innovation, imagination, sense of community, humour and grit.
“These are all qualities you will need in abundance in the days ahead.
“Like the rest of the world we’ll be watching and judging. Our demands and expectations of you will be high.
“But we’ll also be cheering you on and wishing you all the heart and courage you need for the task ahead.”
She said the people of the city wished the delegates “heart and courage” for the task ahead.
World leaders and thousands of delegates will be in Scotland over the next two weeks to thrash out a deal aimed at averting climate disaster.
Pressure is on nations to move away from a reliance on fossil fuels to help lower carbon emissions while supporting those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
