A swan found with severe broken bones including a snapped wing has been put down at a park in Kilmarnock.

The Scottish SPCA (SSPCA) were called to reports of an injured swan on the island of a pond at Kay Park late on Thursday evening.

Due to the time of night, an animal rescue officer was unable to catch it but returned to the park on Friday morning.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called for support and it was discovered the swan had severe broken bones including a broken wing.

The bird was said to be in “pain and distress” and was therefore euthanised

An SSPCA statement read: “We received a call late yesterday, February 20, to an injured swan at Kay Park.

“Due to the time of night and that the swan was on the island, the animal rescue officer was unable to catch it.

“The officer went back out this morning and called the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for support.

“The swan had severe broken bones including a broken wing and was in pain and distress.

“Due to the extent of the swan’s injuries, he was euthanised.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
