A teenager has been charged after three people were injured in a fire at a high-rise block of flats in Coatbridge.

Over 50 firefighters were sent to Calder Court after the blaze broke out within the flats around 6.45am on Friday.

Fire crews from 12 appliances, including specialist vehicles, were sent to the scene.

Images showed a number of flats on fire with residents being evacuated outside the entrance.

Police Scotland had confirmed a 19-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident.

He has now been charged and is due to appear at Airdrie Sheriff Court on Monday.

Three casualties were treated at the scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation and released.

One eyewitness told STV News the alarm was raised by staff from CCG Construction at a site on nearby School Street at around 6.30am.

Detective Inspector Gary Smillie said: “I would like to thank all residents for their cooperation and the local community for their patience during disruption.”
