A teenager brutally attacked his stepdad on New Years Day after a row over noise.
James Cook, then 19, pounced on the man at their home in Glasgow’s Pollok on January 1 2024.
Cook was told to be quiet after returning home from Paisley, Renfrewshire, in the early hours of the morning.
However, the teen was later confronted by his stepfather after he heard the boy talking loudly on a phone call.
Cook lashed out at him by repeatedly punching him and put his stepdad into a head lock.
The victim went on to fall against a radiator as the attack continued upon him.
He was left with a number of injuries which included to his ear which needed 12 stitches and could leave a permanent scar.
First offender Cook pled guilty on Wednesday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting the man to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
Allegations that the victim was knocked unconscious after being repeatedly struck by a mobile phone were deleted by the Crown.
The court heard that Cook told his mum and stepdad that he planned to go out in Paisley with friends for New Years Eve.
His mother woke up to find a number of missed calls from her son.
She answered a call at 12.22am in which a drunk-sounding Cook wished her a happy new year.
He stated that he was possibly going to stay out for the night and would let them know.
Around 5.30am, Cook was dropped off home by the police after he was found shirtless on the middle of the street.
Prosecutor Lauren Sangray said: “She was happy for Cook to come in as long as he kept the noise down and went to bed.”
The couple then went to bed themselves before being woken up.
Ms Sangray said: “He was talking loudly on his phone saying ‘f*** the police’.
“[His stepdad] asked him to be quiet and stop shouting.”
Cook replied: “Who the f*** you talking to, you won’t tell me what to do.”
He again asked Cook to stop shouting and “keep it down.”
Ms Sangray said: “Cook ran upstairs and punched [his stepdad] to the face multiple times and put him in a headlock multiple times.
“While restraining him, [the victim] fell to the ground backwards and Cook fell on top of him then punched him to the face.”
The woman intervened and pulled her son off of her husband.
Police arrived and Cook told the officers: “Aye, I did hit him.”
The victim was taken by ambulance to hospital meantime where he was treated for injuries to his head, ear and nose.
He received 12 stitches for his ear injury which Ms Sangray stated could leave “permanent scarring.”
Garvey McArdle, defending, told the court that the victim fell against a radiator during the attack.
The lawyer added: “He has grown up due to the experience.
“His grandfather is in attendance and he used to work for Strathclyde Police when that was a thing.
“My client also works full time and things are hopeful and not as bleak as they make out.”
Sentence was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff Louise Arrol KC who granted Cook bail meantime.
The sheriff stated: “This is a very serious matter.”
