An 18-year-old boy living with complex physical and mental difficulties is promoting the joy of reading through a creative hide-and-seek project.
Grant McTaggart from West Kilbride in North Ayrshire hides his old books in parks across Scotland for children to find.
So far his books have been found by hundreds of people – with many hiding them again in even more exotic places.
With a press of his finger, Grant has signed off hundreds of letters which, along with a children’s book from his extensive collection, have been placed in a rainproof bag and hidden for someone else to find.
Grant’s mum Elaine McTaggart said: “We’ve got so many books that we didn’t know what to do with and we thought there’s loads of kids who don’t have any books, so we decided to hide some of Grants old books.”
Grant’s venture started in 2019 and has picked up pace ever since.
Those who find his packages are encouraged to post where they found it, read the book inside and then hide it again somewhere else.
Amazingly, Grant’s books are now being found as far away as Cannes in the south of France – and if that wasn’t glamorous enough; the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
After four years of hide-and-seek, Grant’s family say there’s no sign of slowing down. They hope to see many more books popping up across the world.
Elaine McTaggart said: “Grant has left school now, so we’re trying to look at Grant and what his role in society is. This is his kind of voluntary community work that he’s doing. He’s giving back.
“If he’s happy to continue then we’ll find the energy to find new places to hide the books.”
