Three children have died while their mother fights for her life in hospital after a fire at a flat in Paisley.
Firefighters were called to the scene on Renfrew Road at around 9pm on Friday.
Three children, Fiona Gibson, 12, Alexander James Gibson, eight, and Philip Gibson, five, were taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but died a short time later.
Their mother, 39, was taken by ambulance to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley. Hospital staff describe her condition as critical.
Officers said a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “No words are enough. It’s just heartbreaking.
“My thoughts are with all who loved these poor children. Fiona, Alexander and Philip – may you rest in peace.”
Gavin Newlands, MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire North, said: “Utterly heartbreaking news about the tragic fire in Gallowhill.”
He continued: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to their friends and family at this deeply difficult time. May they rest in peace.”
A police spokesperson said: “An investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances of this incident.
“Anyone who has information that could assist our enquiries should contact police via telephone number 101.”
