Three men who were arrested following a bomb scare at Glasgow’s Buchanan Bus Station have been released without charge.

The station and Glasgow Caledonian University were evacuated on Wednesday after reports of a suspicious item being found around 1.10pm.

The threat was deemed to be “credible” by officers, and the surrounding streets were closed to the public.

The slip road onto the M8 at Junction 16 was shut while the incident was ongoing.

Three men were arrested in connection with the recovery of offensive weapons but have been released without charge.

Officers said the item was found to be “innocent in nature”.

Superintendent Derrick Johnston said: “The initial report was treated as a credible threat and, as a precautionary measure and in accordance with procedures, the surrounding area was closed to the public and a cordon put in place.

“The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team (EOD) carried out a controlled explosion after an assessment was made of the impact to nearby gas mains and local train lines.

“The item was then examined and confirmed to be innocent in nature, posing no risk to the public.

“All areas reopened by 9.45pm and I thank the public for their patience and understanding.”

SPT announced that the had closed at 1.50pm on Wednesday.

A large cordon was erected around the station after it was evacuated and the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were on the scene.

Killermont Street, between West Nile Street and North Hanover Street, and Cowcaddens Road, between Port Dundas Road and North Hanover Street, were shut.

The university on Cowcaddens Road told students and staff it had been requested to evacuate.

An email to students said: “Due to an ongoing incident in Buchanan Street Bus Station which is contained, we’ve been requested to evacuate campus immediately as a precaution.

“Please take your personal belongings with you.

“There is no access to Cowcaddens Road. Staff and students must leave via North Hanover Street, Dobbies Loan, or Milton Street.”
