Three youths have been charged after an alleged “deliberate” fire was set at a primary school in Renfrewshire.

Emergency services were called around 8pm on Saturday to a fire at a school on Old Greenock Road in Bishopton.

It is understood that the fire took place at Bishopton Primary School.

The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue service and there were no reports of any injuries.

On Tuesday, police confirmed three male youths had been charged in connection with the fire.

A report will be sent to the relevant authority, officers said.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 9.28pm on Saturday, 11 April by an automatic alarm activation and reports of smoke coming from a school at Greenock Road, Bishopton.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting some cardboard boxes next to a building.

“There were no casualties and crews left the scene after ensuring the area was safe.”

A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm there was an incident of vandalism at Bishopton Primary School on Saturday, April 11, which is being investigated by Police Scotland.

“Repair works to replace doors damaged are under way.”
