SPSA transgender prisoner has been charged with a sexual assault behind bars at HMP Greenock.
Officers were alerted to the incident at the prison, which houses both male and female inmates.
Alex Stewart, who is understood to be a transgender woman, has been arrested and charged in connection with the attack.
A report is due to be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 38-year-old prisoner has been arrested and charged in connection with a sexual assault within HMP Greenock.
“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: “As this matter is subject to ongoing proceedings, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
