Tributes have been paid to a “one in a million” retired school worker after she was found dead at a house in Glasgow.

Emergency services were called to the house on Newfield Square in Nitshill around 9.45pm on Saturday.

Margaret McGowan, 71, was found seriously injured and pronounced dead at the scene.

Amanda Clubley, the headteacher of Gowanbank Primary School, where Ms McGowan worked before retiring, paid tribute following the news of her death.

“Our school community is devastated to hear the tragic news about Margaret who was one in a million,” she said.

Ms Clubley added that although Ms McGowan retired a few years ago, she visited the school frequently.

“Even though Margaret retired a few years ago from Gowanbank, she was still a frequent visitor and walked her dog past the playground each day and always greeted the children and staff with a cheery hello,” she said.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Margaret’s family and friends at this sad time.”

A 78-year-old man has been charged in connection with her death.

A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Detective inspector Jason Nicol said: “This is being treated as a contained incident and there is no wider risk to the public.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and a police presence may remain in the area as this work continues.”
