A teenager has died after falling into the water at the Falls of Clyde in Lanark.

Tributes have been paid to Liam Scott after the incident around 8.05pm on Thursday.

The 18-year-old’s body was recovered on Friday and his next of kin have been made aware.

Football team Bellshill Athletic said they were “devastated to hear the news”, adding Mr Scott “had such an impact on and off the field”.

Hamilton Academical added they were “dreadfully sad to learn of the untimely passing”.

Monica Lennon MSP said his death had “devastated our local communities, including everyone who knew him through his gift for football.”

She continued: “Liam’s parents, family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers.”

Police are investigating the circumstances of his death and said a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Chief inspector Lex Baillie said: “I can confirm that the body of an 18-year-old man has been recovered from the water at Falls of Clyde in Lanark on Friday, June 19.

“His next of kin have been made aware and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

“The man was reported to have fallen into the water at the Falls of Clyde in Lanark around 8.05pm on Thursday, June 18, and a search was conducted by emergency services.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
