Twinverclyde: Scots council welcomes ten sets of twins to school

The siblings are due to begin P1 when schools go back on August 19 after the summer break.

School across Inverclyde will welcome ten sets of twins for the second year in a row.

The siblings are due to begin P1 when schools return on August 19. This will mark the fifth year in a row that the twin count in Inverclyde has hit double figures.

Two sets of this year’s twins will start primary one at St Ninian’s Primary, and St John’s Primary in Port Glasgow will also welcome two for the new term.

The class of 2025 will take the Inverclyde twin count to 167 sets since 2013, which is an average of 13 sets each year.

One parent described the group of twins as the “icing on the cake” for his two daughters.

“Having the opportunity to be with other twins, and take pictures with twins of the same age group. It’s really beautiful coming today, and they had fun. They were smiling and playing,” he told STV News.

Going back to school and entering P1 is a big step for many children and parents, and it can be nerve-wracking.

However, one parent said, despite the nerves, she was “excited” for her children to go to school.

“They’re looking forward to it as well, so that makes it a lot easier,” she said.

Provost McKenzie said: “The excitement is building in households across Inverclyde for the start of the new term next week but it’s doubly exciting for these families as they prepare to send off two children to primary one.

“It has become an annual tradition to get our new P1 twins together to celebrate the start of term here in ‘twinverclyde’, as we’re affectionately known as at this time of year.”

He added: “It’s a bit of fun for all involved and a unique opportunity for parents to take part in a dress rehearsal before the big day on Tuesday.

“We also have the chance to showcase the wonderful teaching facilities we have and extend a warm Inverclyde welcome to everyone here today.

“Whether families are preparing for their children to start school, move into high school, or continuing with their primary or secondary education, it’s an exciting time for everyone and I wish all our pupils, their families and our education staff all the very best for the 2025/25 term.”
