Union Street is to reopen on Friday afternoon, four months after a fire tore through a historic corner building.
A blaze broke out in a vape shop near Glasgow Central on March 8, tearing through a Victorian-era building that has since been demolished.
Following months of disruption, work to demolish the site, remove scaffolding and stabilise the gable walls has been completed, with the area set to fully reopen at 1pm on Friday.
Road and pavement restoration, and hoarding installation ahead of it being dressed for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, is due to be completed in the coming days before the site is handed over to
Glasgow City Council says the reopening is a “key phase” in the area’s recovery following the devastating fire in March 2026.
The last exclusion zone inside Glasgow Central was removed on Monday, with the Union Street and Gordon Street entrances of the station due to reopen on Friday.

The reopening is good news for travellers as key bus routes through the city centre will return after months of diversions.
Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “This coming Friday is a really important day for Glasgow city centre.
“Since the fire, the council has worked alongside partners to try and minimise the impact on things like travel – and it is testament to that collective effort that we are now able to safely open the roads, pavements and buildings around the site and take another big step towards recovery.
“I’m very clear, though, that we still have work to do – and I’m looking forward to focusing on bringing the site back into productive use, both in the short term and for the future.”
In addition, the council has said the work on the Argyle Street West Avenue has been “substantially completed” up to the Hope Street junction.
The council has appointed architects to explore the “meanwhile use” of the Union Corner site before a permanent solution can be found.
Architectural firm O’Donnell Brown will develop plans for how the site can be used over the next four years or so.
