Police have warned members of the public to be wary when handling cash following reports fake notes are in circulation in Ayrshire.

Officers have urged staff who work in shops or in roles where they handle cash to be on their guard for counterfeit notes.

People who are selling items online on social media sites are also warned to be extra vigilant, and urged to check they are not being handed fake notes by fraudlent buyers as payment.

Police said members of the public should check notes for spelling mistakes, wording, changes to the hologram, serial numbers and watermarks.

Officers said people who deliberately use counterfeit currency are committing a crime, and all instances reported will be investigated.

If you suspect you may have received one of these notes or have information about those using them, you should call police on 101.
