A woman has been charged with murder following the death of a 78-year-old at a house in South Lanarkshire.

Susan Sergison, 78, was found with serious injuries on Gilmour Drive in Hamilton at around 8.25pm on Wednesday, and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Scotland said they were treating the death as unexplained, before confirming on Thursday a woman had been arrested in connection with assault.

Louise Markson appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday where she faced a charge of murder.

The 50-year-old, from Wishaw, made no plea during an initial appearance and was remanded in custody.

She will appear in court again within the next eight days.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Neil Smith said: “My thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who has died at this very difficult time and our officers will continue to support them as this investigation continues.

“I am aware that this incident will be of concern to the community in Hamilton but I would like to reassure people that we have a dedicated team of officers working on this investigation and there is no threat to the wider community.

“Officers will remain in the area as enquiries are carried out and anyone with any concerns can approach them.”
