Work on £19m ‘street in the sky’ bridge begins next month

Construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the M8 in Glasgow will begin next month.

Proposals to develop a “street in the sky” – to replace an existing bridge deemed “not fit for purpose” by Glasgow City Council – have reached the next stage.

Members of the local authority will meet on Thursday, when they are expected to award the contract to builder BAM Nuttall Ltd.

A report submitted to councillors states that the new bridge will take 79 weeks to build and is expected to be completed by August 2021.

The new bridge forms part of a £250m redevelopment plan for the Sighthill area of Glasgow, which aims to transform existing residential and public open space into a new and improved development.

A schools campus, community facilities, low-level housing and parkland will feature.
