Work to begin on Glasgow's Stockwell Street in city's 'biggest' street transformation

Work to transform one of Glasgow’s busiest streets is set to get under way next week and will take over a year to complete.

Stockwell Street is the latest part of the city to be transformed as part of the Avenues project.

Work will start on Monday, August 10, as part of the next stage in the “biggest transformation of the city centre’s streets and spaces since the 1970s”.

The project will update the existing street infrastructure, including resurfacing, new traffic lights, and a new two-way segregated cycle route.

The new route will stretch between Bridgegate and Howard Street, with the northbound cycleway to continue to Stockwell Place.

It will form an important connection between the South City Way at the southern end and the cycleway on Argyle Street East Avenue at the northern end.

In addition, new trees will be planted and rain gardens created to improve the area’s appearance.

The work will be completed over three phases and is due to last until late 2027.

The first phase will take place between Trongate and Osborne Street before moving to Bridgegate and Howard Street, and onto Howard Street and Osborne Street.

The Avenues project will also see upgrades made to George Square, Argyle Street and Duke Street. Clyde Street, High Street and George Street are also in line for an upgrade.

Angus Millar, convener for city centre recovery at Glasgow City Council, said: “The Stockwell Street Avenue will not only help to make this part of the city centre a more attractive place for all who live, work and visit there, but also improve the connections for people travelling in different ways to and from the city centre.
