A British soldier has died during a training exercise in northern Iraq, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.
In a statement on Monday, the MoD said: “It is with deep regret that we can confirm that a training accident occurred in northern Iraq on Sunday, 31 May 2026, in which a service person from the British Army died.”
The MoD said the service member’s family had been informed and that they had requested a “period of grace before further details are released.”
They added: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends at this sad time.”
Defence Secretary John Healey made a statement to the Commons on Monday regarding the death, saying: “I know the thoughts of the House will be with the family and with the unit at this desperately sad time.”
