Three members of Italy’s militarised police have been killed in an explosion during an eviction operation at a farmhouse near the northeastern Italian city of Verona.
Another 13 police officers were injured in the explosion early on Tuesday.
A brother and a sister in their 60s were arrested in connection with the explosion in the town of Castel d’Azzano, 10 kilometres (six miles) southwest of Verona, while a third sibling escaped, police said.
It’s understood that the two-story farmhouse had been filled with gas, and the explosion was set off when authorities opened the door.
Regional governor Luca Zaia says this was the second time authorities attempted to evict the siblings, who had occupied the abandoned structure about a year ago.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her condolences for the deaths of the carabinieri, part of a national militarised police force that plays a central law enforcement role in Italy.
She said: “With deep sorrow, I learn of the tragic passing of three Carabinieri and the injury of thirteen others, including members of the Carabinieri, Fire Brigade, and Police, following an explosion during a clearance operation in the Verona area.
“My condolences, and those of the Government, go out to the families of the victims. I personally expressed my solidarity to the General Commander of the Carabinieri in a phone call, extending it to all members of the Carabinieri.

“My thoughts are also with all the Law Enforcement Forces and the Fire Brigade, who work every day with dedication and courage in service to the State.
“To the injured, I extend my wishes for a speedy recovery, and my gratitude goes to the medical staff and all those who responded with promptness and professionalism.
“I follow the developments of this tragic event with concern and sorrow, which reminds us of the value and daily sacrifice of those who serve Italy and its citizens.”
