The famous Lovers’ Arch in Puglia collapsed on Valentine’s Day after severe weather hit the south of Italy.

The Sant’Andrea sea stacks in Melendugno – one of the most iconic coastal features in Salento – completely crumbled into the water.

The destruction of the natural structure was caused by storm surges and heavy rainfall in recent days, the latest of which occurred on Saturday night.

This is the most significant damage caused by coastal erosion to the Salento landscape.

“It’s a terrible blow to the heart,” said mayor Maurizio Cisternino.

“We woke up this morning and Valentine’s Day gave us this beautiful gift.

“One of the most famous tourist attractions on our coast and in the whole of Italy is disappearing,” he added.
