Waitrose has issued a warning to customers not to consume one of their dairy products as it may contain blue cloth.

The supermarket giant warned customers its 500g Salted Dairy Butter product was “unsafe to eat” via the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Customers who purchased the product with the best before date of June 19, 2024, have been urged “not to eat” it and return the product to the store it was purchased from for a full refund.

The product was recalled over fears the butter block contained pieces of blue cloth.

The FSA notice read: “If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).

“The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.

“In some cases, a ‘Food Alert for Action’ is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.”

A Waitrose spokesperson said: “We’re recalling this line as a precaution, after fragments of blue cloth were found in a very small number of products.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience and will be offering customers a full refund.”
