Giorgio Armani legendary fashion designer dies aged 91

The legendary Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91.

His company confirmed the news in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

Armani was founded in 1975 in Milan and reinvented Italian fashion with a focus on men and women’s suits.

It then expanded into fragrances and cosmetics, with its name licensed out to branding of various products.

On a post on the brand’s Instagram page, it said he had worked until his final days.

“Over the years, Giorgio Armani has created a vision that has expanded from fashion to every aspect of life, anticipating the times with extraordinary clarity and precision,” the statement read.

“He was driven by an inexorable curiosity, attention for the present and people. In this journey, he created an open dialogue with the public, becoming a beloved and respected figure for his ability to communicate with everyone.

“Always attentive to the needs of the community, he has committed himself on many fronts, above all to his beloved Milan.”

The statement was signed “his employees, his family”.

Armani has been credited with being at the forefront of Red Carpet fashion and had been planning a major retrospective at Milan Fashion Week to celebrate 50 years of his brand.

The company said he had given “life to a vision shaped by precision, balance and restraint”.

“From that moment, a new language began to emerge, capable of conveying identity with strength and intention, liberated from excess and grounded in clarity,” the company said.

“Born in the heart of a Milan that had only recently become the capital of Italian fashion, this aesthetic established the foundation for a style that looks ‘beyond the present’, defined by its purity and authority.”
