Hundreds of people have been arrested in France after violence broke out during celebrations for Paris Saint-Germain’s second Champions League title win.
About 20,000 people gathered on the Champs-Élysées after PSG beat Arsenal on penalties in a dramatic final in Budapest.
Fans marched along the avenues near the Arc de Triomphe, with some setting off flares and blaring car horns.
A group tried to storm a police station in the French capital while across the city, shops were vandalised and cars set on fire.
French police reported that they had detained more than 780 people involved in violent clashes following Paris Saint-Germain’s win of the Champions League title. Earlier, Paris police said that by 10 p.m., 45 people had been taken into custody before updating the figure to 400 later in the morning.
Officers also contained about 1,000 people gathered near the PSG stadium in the 16th Arrondissement and cleared barricades made from bicycles.
In May last year, following PSG’s first title, when 201 people were injured in the French capital and police made more than 500 arrests across France, Paris was on high alert, with 8,000 police officers deployed across the city.
PSG’s victory deprived the Gunners of what could have been their first Champions League title in their 140-year history – hot off the heels of their first Premier League title in 22 years.
Saturday’s match at Budapest’s Puskas Arena was 1-1 at the end of regulation time and extra time, as Kai Havertz’s sixth-minute opener was cancelled out by Ousmane Dembele’s second-half penalty.
Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes fired the last of his team’s penalties over the bar, while Eberechi Eze also missed his shot, handing PSG a 4-3 shootout victory.
