Metropolitan Police confirm second person dead after Brixton Academy crowd crush at Asake concert

A second person has died after a crowd crush at a south London concert venue last Thursday.

Gaby Hutchinson, 23, was one of three people badly hurt when ticketless fans tried to get into a show by Nigerian artist Asake at the O2 Brixton Academy on Thursday.

The Metropolitan Police said that Mr Hutchinson, who was working as security at the venue, died in the early hours of Monday morning.

The news follows the death of mother-of-two Rebecca Ikumelo, who died in hospital following the incident.

A 21-year-old woman remains in a critical condition.

Chief superintendent Colin Wingrove of the Metropolitan Police said: “It is devastating news that a second person has lost their life following the events on Thursday. I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to Gaby’s family at this unimaginably difficult time.”

The force said the people critically injured in the crush were all in the foyer of the building.

In a statement outside Brixton police station on Friday afternoon, he said an “urgent investigation” was under way.

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are working to established exactly what happened by reviewing CCTV, phone footage, speaking to witnesses and conducting forensic examinations.

Police cordons outside the venue have been removed, however cordons remain in place inside the building while officers continue to examine the scene.

A total of eight people were taken to hospital after a crowd attempted to gain entry without tickets, the Metropolitan Police previously confirmed.

Ahead of the gig, Asake had posted on Twitter asking fans not to come to the venue unless they had a valid ticket.

The concert was the third of three sold-out dates at the 4,921-standing capacity venue and concluded a run of UK dates.

The Met have set up an online page for the submission of photos, videos and information.

The force added that there were around 4,000 potential witnesses present at the time of the incident and are urging any members of the public with information to come forward.
