Mike Waltz to leave role as US National Security Advisor, reports suggest

Waltz previously admitted "full responsibility" for mistakenly adding a journalist to a Signal group chat about military plans in March.

Current US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz is leaving his White House role, reports have suggested.

It comes just hours after the top Trump administration official made a television appearance discussing Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Waltz previously admitted “full responsibility” for mistakenly adding a journalist to a Signal group chat about military plans in March.

He described the incident as embarassing, after messages about strikes on Houthi militants in Yemen were leaked by The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, who was added to the group where plans were discussed.

President Trump had previously downplayed the incident, and defended Waltz.

“The main thing was, nothing happened … It wasn’t classified information … But I always say you have to learn from every experience. I think it was very unfair the way they attacked Michael [Waltz]. He’s a good person,” Trump said.

His departure from the White House marks the first major staff shake-up.
