Millions of Scottish Gas customers to get £400 rebate direct into bank

Millions of people are set to receive a £400 energy bill discount in a bid to help customers with rising costs this winter.

The discount will be paid to ten million British Gas customers across the UK, including in Scotland where the supplier trades as Scottish Gas, customers in October to help people struggling with bills.

The money will be provided through the British Gas Energy Support Fund, which gives grants to those most in need.

Customers who pay their energy bills by direct debit will receive the £400 discount directly into their bank account, while households that don’t pay their bills by debit will receive the discount as credit.

The discount will be will be made up of six instalments, starting from October.

Customers will get a discount worth £66 in October and November, then a £67 discount will then be provided every month between December and March 2023.

It comes as Prime Minister Liz Truss confirmed that energy bills are set to be frozen at £2,500 a year.

The freeze will apply for the next two years from October 1 under a new Energy Price Guarantee, in a move that is aimed at protecting the UK from soaring energy bills.

The typical household gas and electricity bill had been expected to rise to more than £3,500 in October.

Campaigners have warned of the risk to lives this winter due to soaring energy costs.
